Located on a limestone plateau in the Serrania de Ronda mountains, the Andalusian town of Ronda sits astride a world-famous landmark: El Tajo is a spectacular gorge, some 120m deep, that draws coachloads of daytripping tourists up the winding, scenic road from the coast. The dramatic gorge, which is crossed by three bridges, divides the town into two parts: La Ciudad, with its maze-like Moorish street plan, to the south, and the newer El Mercadillo, with what is claimed to be Spain's oldest bullring, to the north. At 1,000m altitude, it can get chilly in Ronda in the winter - residents there do not experience the balmy shirt-sleeve evenings well into November that their coastal neighbours enjoy - and summer temperatures can climb ferociously high. Though only about an hour's drive inland, it's a world away from the international lifestyle of the Costas.
