Marbella probably has the best winter climate on the European mainland, protected from north winds by the hills behind it, and by its situation in a bay that shelters it from east winds on one Spain's few directly south-facing stretches of Mediterranean coastline. The benign winter climate and international population give it a year-round buzz - there is no such thing as downtime in flashy, showy Marbella, where top-class facilities range from department stores and designer shops to dozens of golf courses within easy reach. There's a pretty old town, but development now stretches inland beyond the motorway. The recent rapid rate of expansion has left the infrastructure struggling, but the local authorities are working to improve the situation.
